Panastereo SP23 EX decoder
In 1988, Panalogic Corporation introduced an optional rear wall
surround channel for optical stereo soundtracks called Surround
SX. Panastereo cinema processors were the first and only product
ever to offer this feature. Optical Surround SX provided a rear
wall surround channel which contained only the encoded surround
signal, when it was present. The left and right wall surround channel
speakers still contained the usual mix of encoded and unencoded
surround signals as provided by conventional cinema sound processors.
In 1995, Panalogic Corporation publicly demonstrated a follow-up
concept called Digital Surround SX. At Avoca Beach Theatre (near
Sydney, Australia) a Panastereo CM224 matrix decoder was connected
to the stereo surround outputs of a Panastereo CSP3200 processor
to provide a decoded rear wall surround channel from DTS 5.1 digital
soundtracks. 3 years later, in October 1998, Lucasfilm THX and Dolby
Laboratories announced that Star Wars Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace
would be deliberately "encoded" with a rear wall surround channel
for replay using exactly the same technique. To allow cinemas to
take full advantage of this renewed interest in a rear wall surround
channel, Panalogic Corp is proud to announce the release of the
Panastereo SP23 Digital Surround SX processor for replay of digital
5.1 soundtracks in Digital 6.1 Extended Surround. The SP23 is designed
to decode up to two additional surround channels from the stereo
surround channels of 5.1 digital players. The SP23 connects to the
stereo surround outputs of any cinema processor and provides a rear
wall surround channel and an optional future additional surround
channel. The SP23 uses the same legendary high separation THX approved
matrix decoder circuit as used in Panastereo cinema processors for
exceptional decoding performance, free of the artifacts inherent
in all other systems. The unit also uses standard high performance
THX approved Panastereo CM237 or CM347 equaliser cards enabling
users with Panastereo processors to re-use the surround equaliser(s)
from the processor. Features of the new Panastereo SP23 include:
High performance matrix decoding of centre (rear) surround information.
Choice of 10 band octave (SP23-10) or 30 band 1/3 octave (SP23-30)
equalisers for all three surround channels. Users with Panastereo
processors can re-use the surround equaliser card from the cinema
processor in the SP23 to save the cost of duplication. Provides
three channel mono surround for stereo analogue soundtracks. Balanced
inputs and outputs for hum and buzz free installation. Superb noise
and distortion performance. SX decode on/off and input level LED
indicators. CSP1200 / CP65 pin compatible 25way D automation connector.
Input / output connections via plug-in Phoenix connectors. Power-off
bypass and manual bypass facility. Built-in power supply module
(No messy plug packs). 1U standard rack mount chassis with front
accessible plug in card modules. Designed and manufactured in Australia.
Fully compatible with the Dolby Digital Surround EX format planned
for Star Wars and other films to follow.
